Friday-Sunday: Benefit for Charlie & Melodie Murphy at Giddy Ups. An longtime fixture amid the recently up-and-coming South Austin musical enclave, Giddy Ups hosts regular Wednesday shows with Speedy Sparks’ Koolerators plus a Thursday open mic and other local shows featuring local roots acts. This weekend, they’ve put together three days of music to help out the Murphys, whos trailer recently was stolen while the band was playing a show. Performers include Charlie Murphy himself on Friday along with Earle Poole Ball; a Saturday bill that starts in the afternoon with George Ensle, Ruby Dee & the Snakehandlers and others; and another day-into-evening show on Sunday with Billy Eli, Hank & Shaidri Aldrich and more. Friday: Sam Outlaw at Cactus Cafe vs. the Outlaws at Scoot Inn. Well, Austin is pretty much known as the birthplace of outlaw country, right? On his second album “Tenderheart,” released last week, Southern California country-rocker Sam Outlaw has less in common with classic Willie & Waylon than with contemporary Texans such as Robert Ellis or Jonathan Terrell, even if he’s not quite at their creative level. The Outlaws have a much longer history: The Southern-rockers from Florida hit it big in the 1970s with “There Goes Another Love Song” and “Green Grass and High Tides.” They’ve been through lots of lineup changes since then, but singer-guitarist Henry Paul and drummer Marty Yoho remain from the glory days. Saturday: Sweet Summer ft. Cupcakke at the Mohawk. At 19-years-old, Chicago rapper Cupcakke, who attended the same Southside elementary school as drill king, Chief Keef, is best known for her gleefully obscene sex raps and her freaky stage shows. But on her new album “Queen Elizabitch,” that dropped at the end of March, she deftly tackles a range of subjects — the cycle of violence and poverty that is savaging her city, body issues, relationships and the LGBT community that has embraced her from the beginning — with astonishingly lyricism and skill. The Weird City Hip-hop Fest helped put together this shindig and ATX hip-hop is represented at the show by heavy hitters Magna Carda, LNS Crew and more. Matt Sonzala’s Pushermania presents a Texas hip-hop road map on the indoor stage with K-Rino from Houston, T.Y.E. of Dallas and Worldwide repping San Antonio.
Saturday Index Fest at Statesman Parking Lot. We’re still wondering why this modest beers-and-music event changed its name from Untapped, or whether its new title should properly be rendered as Fest, Index. Regardless, there’s music from Austin City Limits Music Fest veterans Local Natives of Los Angeles, as well as electronica duo Frenship, indie-rockers Grizfolk, local stage-spectacle Calliope Musicals and DJ Mark Markus. Saturday-Sunday: Brian Wilson does Pet Sounds at ACL Live. These are billed as “the final performances” of Wilson doing the Beach Boys’ most acclaimed album, though we subscribe to the never-say-never axiom when it comes to such pronouncements. Still, Austin is lucky to have another shot at this tour, which was supposed to be part of last year’s Levitation Fest that got canceled by stormy weather. $55-$133. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com. — P.B.
Sunday: Emily King at Antone’s. With a silky voice, stylish sophistication and an expansive aesthetic, King creates music well-suited to this era of soulful fusion. The progeny of a jazz singing-duo, King grew up in New York immersed in the city’s vibrant music scene. Her 2015 album, “The Switch,” was a collection of sweeping emotional declarations, graceful meditations and surprisingly funky grooves. With the album’s reissue last year, her career took flight.
