This week’s music picks: Gaga, Durawa, Ian Moore and more

Monday: Ernie Durawa’s 75th Birthday Bash at Antone’s. One of Austin’s most accomplished and respected musicians, Durawa spent many years behind the drums for the Texas Tornados with his longtime pals Doug Sahm, Augie Meyers, Freddy Fender and Flaco Jimenez. These days he hosts a weekly Tuesday show at El Mercado Backstage, but for this special birthday salute, he’ll be at Austin’s home of the blues. Many special guests will join in saluting him, including Meyers, Kevin Russell of Shinyribs, Joe King Carrasco, the Peterson Brothers, Los Jazz Vatos, Chris Bell, Murali Coryell, Aaron Lack, Michael Milligan and Ruben V. $15 suggested donation benefits Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. 6:30 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — P.B.

Tuesday: Lady Gaga at Erwin Center. Sometimes Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta allows her agit-prop shenanigans to overshadow her artistry. Remember the time she had a performance artist vomit paint on her during South by Southwest? But beneath the spectacle, and also because of it, the avant-pop provocateur is one of the most powerful performers of her generation. Her new tour is a carefully choreographed audio-visual adventure that clocks in at over two hours, and despite the fact that she’s performing in the country’s largest arenas, reports say the show is rich with warmth, intimacy and heart. $48-$228. 7 p.m. 1701 Red River St. uterwincenter.com. A late-night heads-up: After the show, Gaga band member Brian Newman will head over to Antone’s for an 11 p.m. show to play songs from his upcoming Verve Records debut. $10-12. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. — D.S.S./P.B.

Thursday: Ian Moore at Stateside at the Paramount. An Austin native who moved to the Seattle area a couple of decades ago, Moore still makes a point to visit his hometown often. Though he often performs with more blues-based or rock-oriented outfits, he’s playing an acoustic show for his eighth annual holiday tour with stops at many cities in Texas and neighboring states. Most of the shows are solo affairs, but because his ties in Austin run so deep, he’ll have a few friends joining him on this night, including keyboardist Bukka Allen, cellist Brian Standefer, fiddler Warren Hood and singer Amy Nelson. $22-$28. 8 p.m. 719 Congress Ave. austintheatre.org. — P.B.

Thursday: Johnny Nicholas CD-reissue release at Antone’s. The blues guitarist and songwriter who’s been based out of the Hilltop Cafe near Fredericksburg since the early 1980s has just reissued a 40-year-old album that helps to fill in his historical background. Nicholas moved to Austin in the 1970s to join western swing outfit Asleep at the Wheel after making a lasting mark on the blues scene in Ann Arbor, Michigan. “Too Many Bad Habits,” initially released on the Bling Pig label in 1977, features work with Ann Arbor fixtures Big Walter Horton, Johnny Shines and Boogie Woogie Red alongside tracks recorded in Austin with some of his Wheel bandmates including leader Ray Benson and bassist Tony Garnier (later to become Bob Dylan’s longtime bandleader). The second disc features another dozen tracks from the Ann Arbor sessions that didn’t appear on the original release. 9:30 p.m. $10-$12. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com. Nicholas also will be at Waterloo Records earlier in the day for a free 5 p.m. in-store performance (600 N. Lamar Blvd., waterloorecords.com). — P.B.
