Monday-Wednesday: J.D. McPherson at Continental Club. On two albums with Rounder Records, rising Tulsa, Okla., star McPherson has dug deep into the roots of classic 1950s rock ’n’ roll, which makes this three-night stand a perfect fit tor the old-school-cool aesthetic of the Continental. McPherson plays at 10 p.m. each night, with Dylan Bishop, Barfield and Whitney Rose following at midnight on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. $22. 1315 S. Congress Ave. continentalclub.com.

Tuesday: Lydia Loveless at Antone’s. Alt-country siren Loveless and her band lit up several venues during SXSW last spring, building on previous promising releases with strong new material that surfaced in August on the Bloodshot Records album “Real.” She seems poised for a big breakthrough, with a documentary film from director Gorman Bechard screening in select markets and festivals this fall. Will Courtney & the Wild Bunch open. $15. 8:30 p.m. 305 E. Fifth St. antonesnightclub.com.

Thursday: Buddy Guy at ACL Live. Perhaps the greatest still-living legend of Chicago blues seems to play Austin around once a year. He turned 80 this summer, so it would seem wise to catch him while you have the chance; but if you do, you may well be pleasantly surprised at how energetic his performances still are. $39-$62. 8 p.m. 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. acl-live.com.
