Monday: Open mic with Kacy Crowley at Cactus Cafe. Recovery from December’s sudden closure of busy local coffeehouse venue Strange Brew continues steadily. Residencies for important local acts such as Durawa and Wrenfro were picked up quickly El Mercado Backstage and One-2-One Bar, respectively. Now comes the entirely logical relocation of Kacy Crowley’s Sunday open mic series: She’s bringing it to the Cactus, which had a long tradition of open mics under past management before KUT/KUTX took over the University of Texas Student Union venue. Manager Matt Munoz said he’d wanted to wait “until we found something special” to bring back the open mics. Rescuing Crowley’s popular series fits that bill nicely. Tuesday-Saturday: Southern Culture on the Skids at Continental Club. It must be hot-roddin’ time again. Whenever the annual Lonestar Round Up car show pulls into the Travis County Expo Center, as it does next weekend, North Carolina’s reigning trailer-trash rockers arrive early for a five-day stand at the city’s coolest car-culture-centric nightclub. Different opening acts will be featured each night, but we especially like Tuesday’s kickoff lineup, with hometown roots favorites Uncle Lucius on the bill and Continental grand dame Toni Price kicking things off in her 7 p.m. happy-hour slot. Thursday: Darden Smith album release in-store at Waterloo Records. When Darden Smith puts a band together to make a record, like he did for his new “Everything,” he doesn’t mess around. Holed up at Arlyn Studios last month, he brought aboard a cast full of aces: bassist Roscoe Beck (Leonard Cohen), drummer JJ Johnson (Tedeschi Trucks Band), keyboardist Michael Ramos (Patty Griffin), guitarist Charlie Sexton (Bob Dylan) and multi-instrumentalist David Mansfield (too many to mention). It’s a testament to the respect in-demand musicians have for Smith that they all answered the call. Free. 5 p.m. 600 N. Lamar Blvd. waterloorecords.com.
