OUR TOP PICKS
Friday: Ray Prim album release at North Door. Soulful singer-songwriter Prim, our Austin360 Artist of the Month for September, celebrates the release of his new album “To Whom It May Concern” with an extended version of his big band. More string players, electric guitarist Andre Moran and some guest vocalists will join Prim’s core six-piece support crew. One of those guest singers might be Suzanna Choffel, who appears on the album and opens this show. $20-$25. 7 p.m. 502 Brushy St. ndvenue.com. – P.B.

Friday-Saturday: Sonic Transmissions Festival. The self-proclaimed “pioneering improvisational music festival without boundaries” presents a diverse cross-section of experimental sounds. Featured artists include jazz multi-instrumentalist Joe McPhee, Norwegian jazz bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and cumbia group Carmelo Torres y Los Toscos. On Friday, the fest presents a Psychedelic Bogotá Cumbia Dance Party with acts from Colombia and NYC at Kick Butt Coffee. On Saturday, the party moves to East Austin and the sounds morph to free jazz with a theme of “classic meets new wave.” After a free (donations accepted) day party at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, the festival closes with an evening jam at the historic Victory Grill. Night parties $15-$20. Friday: 8 p.m. doors. 5775 Airport Blvd. Saturday:2 p.m. and 8 p.m. 1104 and 1106 E. 11th St. sonictransmissions.com. — D.S.S.

Saturday: LeRoi Brothers “Check This Action” reissue party at C-Boy’s. Fixtures on the local scene for more than 30 years, the LeRois first lit up the town in the early 1980s, with twin guitarists Don Leady and Steve Doerr leading a charge propelled by drummer Mike Buck. “Check This Action” was an attention-getting debut on local label Amazing Records that helped earn the band a deal with MCA. Various members came and went over the years, and a different lineup still plays regularly at Antone’s and elsewhere today. But the original trio will reunite for this show celebrating a fine new Jungle Records reissue of “Check This Action” that adds six bonus tracks (including the “Moon Twist” EP). Leady’s subsequent band, the Tail Gators, open. $10. 10 p.m. 2008 S. Congress Ave. cboys.com. — P.B.

Sunday: Zac Brown Band, Darrell Scott at Austin360 Amphitheater. There may well have been no bigger country act over the last decade than the Zac Brown Band, whose new Dave Cobb-produced album “Welcome Home” follows four straight platinum records. Their jam-band/Southern-rock/country-folk crossover sound may have followed the massive success of Dave Matthews, but the three-time Grammy-winning Georgians soon left their own mark. A smart addition to the bill is Darrell Scott, a fine singer-songwriter who’s penned smashes for the Dixie Chicks and Brad Paisley as well as playing in Robert Plant’s Band of Joy. Caroline Jones opens. $39.75-$82.75. 8 p.m. 9201 Circuit of the Americas Blvd. austin360amphitheater.com. — P.B.
