Mohawk 10-year anniversary with the Get Up Kids. Before James Moody and crew took over, the venue at the corner of 10th and Red River streets was home to a series of ill-fated clubs with terrible names and sketchy vibes. In the decade since they set up shop, the club has grown into one of the finest mid-sized venues in the country and a cornerstone of the vibrant Red River Cultural District. The party kicks off on Friday with influential emo act the Get Up Kids. It continues through Sept. 17 with shows from Swans, Roky Erickson, GZA and more. Brazil Day at Antone’s. The nation of Brazil celebrates independence from Portugal on Sept. 7, but the hip-shaking rhythms continue into the weekend with this blowout bash hosted by Austin Samba. From the percussive blasts of Maracatu Texas and the lively samba of Susanna Sharpe and the Samba Police to Seu Jacinto’s Texas take on folkloric Forró music, the evening presents a broad selection of the best Brazilian sounds in Austin. $15-$20. Eastside Kings Festival. Eastside District Limits, anyone? This one-day-only micro-local fest is a big draw for East Austin, filling eight venues with dozens of bands that lean toward the blues sounds long intrinsic to the neighborhood’s culture. Goo Goo Dolls at Statesman Skyline Theater. “People still need human contact,” Goo Goo Dolls singer and guitarist John Rzeznik told us last week when we talked with him about the band’s current tour behind their new album “Boxes,” which came out in May. “I think the one thing that can’t be replicated in some sort of computer or virtual reality or whatever is being in a room with 5,000 people screaming, and the thump of a sound system and a light show, and somebody playing music in front of you, and everybody in that room having something in common.” Read our full preview of the show, including recollections from the band’s first visit to Austin at a small Sixth Street club in 1991, later this week in the American-Statesman and on mystatesman.com.
