Pitchfork Radio kickoff at Barracuda. You’re probably familiar with Pitchfork the online music review site, and perhaps Pitchfork the festival, which takes place annually in Chicago. Now there’s also Pitchfork Radio, billed as “a streaming, free-form, live Internet radio station.” The station will conduct its broadcast at Barracuda during daytime hours this week, and they’ll celebrate the first day with a free show featuring acclaimed local indie bands Holy Wave and Otis the Dstroyer. HAAM Benefit Day. The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians hosts fundraising events throughout the year, but the big enchilada is this 11th annual affair in which hundreds of bands perform in all sorts of venues across town, including grocery stores, hotels, the airport and even a couple of McDonald’s locations. The hub of all the activity is the downtown Whole Foods, where Nakia & the Blues Grifters will kick things off at the un-musician-like hour of 6 a.m. for a 14-hour run that will include appearances by Carson McHone, Bill Kirchen, Jackie Venson and many others. Greyhounds and Emily Gimble at Guero’s Oak Garden. If this juxtaposition between the R&B duo Greyhounds and keyboardist Emily Gimble, who recently left western swing band Asleep at the Wheel, seems surprising on the surface, there’s actually a lot of common ground between their musical interests. Gimble’s upcoming record reaches far beyond the country roots of her fiddle-legend grandfather Johnny Gimble; furthermore, she and Greyhounds keyboardist Anthony Ferrell are two of this city’s most soulful vocalists. The Mohawk’s 10-year anniversary celebration continues with a night of hard-hitting hip-hop featuring Wu-Tang founding member GZA, an emcee widely regarded as one of the best lyricists of all time.
